Dortmund to unveil Rheinmetall as new shirt sponsor
Bundesliga giants to end long-standing association with Evonik
Borussia Dortmund are set to unveil Rheinmetall as their new shirt sponsor, bringing an end to their long-standing association with Evonik.
The deal is reportedly worth €25 million per year and will see the Rheinmetall logo emblazoned on the front of Dortmund's shirts from the 2023-24 season.
Evonik has been Dortmund's shirt sponsor since 2006, but the two parties have decided to part ways after 17 years.
Rheinmetall is a German multinational company specializing in the manufacture of defense technology, automotive components, and energy systems.
The company has been criticized by some for its involvement in the arms industry, but Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke defended the decision to sign a sponsorship deal with Rheinmetall.
"Rheinmetall is a global player with a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability," Watzke said.
"We are proud to have them as our new shirt sponsor and believe that this partnership will be mutually beneficial."
The Rheinmetall logo will first appear on Dortmund's shirts when they face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on August 18.
