Kyiv region hit by Russian shelling after power plant attack
Russia on Thursday accused Kyiv of killing 14 people in a missile strike on a Russian-controlled power plant in Ukraine earlier this week, while Ukrainian officials reported new attacks in the Kyiv region.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces fired three missiles at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant in the Russia-controlled Kherson region on Wednesday, killing 14 people and wounding 13 others.
The ministry said the missiles hit the plant's administrative building and damaged a power unit, but did not say whether the plant was still operating.
In a statement, the Ukrainian military denied any involvement in the attack, calling the Russian claims "another disinformation campaign."
The reported missile strike on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant comes amid intensified fighting in southern Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces have been carrying out a counteroffensive to retake territory lost to Russian forces earlier in the war.
The Ukrainian military has said it has made significant gains, recapturing dozens of villages and towns in recent weeks.
The Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday also accused Ukraine of shelling the town of Shakhtarsk in the Donetsk region, killing one civilian and wounding four others.
In the Kyiv region, Ukrainian officials reported new attacks on Thursday, with the regional governor, Oleksiy Kuleba, saying that Russian forces had shelled the village of Klavdiievo-Tarasove, damaging houses and a school.
The governor also said that the town of Obukhiv was shelled, with several residential buildings and a hotel damaged.
There were no reports of casualties in the attacks in the Kyiv region.
The Russian attacks on the Kyiv region come after a series of drone attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, which have raised concerns about the capital's vulnerability to air strikes.
The Ukrainian military has said it has increased its air defenses in and around Kyiv, but it is unclear whether they will be able to prevent future attacks.
The fighting in Ukraine has been going on for more than six months, and there is no sign of it ending anytime soon. Russia has said it will continue its military operation until it achieves its goals, while Ukraine has vowed to fight on until it regains all of its lost territory.
